What is the Fingertips Challenge?
A few years ago, quirky alternative rock group They Might Be Giants released a series of songs called the "Fingertips" series. The songs were not so much songs as they were mere suggestions of songs, just a taste, a brief snippet, an appetizer for more. While listening to the songs one day, I realized how interesting the concept was: to tease and appetize and then pull away and move on to something else before someone could get settled in a particular thing. Then it hit me-- it would be a great fanfic challenge. After further thought, I came up with the following guidelines for the challenge:
Write between 10 and 21 (21 is the number of pieces They Might Be Giants had for the song series that inspired this) snippets or "Fingertips" of stories for a compilation.
Any and all fandoms are welcome! You can even switch fandoms within a single set of Fingertips.
You can have a theme, and many people decide to go that route, but you don't have to, either. You can place random completely unrelated Fingertips together, or string them all together with a common theme or specific connection. Some choose to write a set of Fingertips all based in the same fandom, or a set that's completely alternate universe. It can be anything, though. The idea is that this is a nearly limitless challenge.
The individual Fingertips should be short, though. There's no law saying you can't write really long Fingertips, but the point is that these are not whole, complete stories. Just suggestions of stories.
Have old unfinished fics you are never going to finish? PLUNDER THEM! It's really satisfying to get some of the ideas out there that you were worried were perpetually stuck in WIP purgatory.
